I’ve always loved notecards. I buy unique cards from local artists whenever I get the chance. I have so many around the house I should probably start writing letters.
Maybe you’re the same way as me. It’s a great way to get to know an artist. And as an artist, I find love to surround myself with inspiration. My walls are full of inspiration!
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to create a custom notecard. Decades ago (before I started painting) I made some cards through “Stamping Up.” It did not fill my creative bucket.
When I started my watercolor journey I told my partner
that my main goal was to create a note card. Something that could be sent to someone, hung on a wall, and create smiles. The first question out of his mouth was “why not just sell your originals?” Sure. But cards too. They are different. They are accessible. They are able to be personalized with a note. They are not as “precious” so they can be taped to a fridge or stuck in a book as a marker. In a lot of ways they are just romantic and nostalgic.

Creating the cards was not as simple as I had originally imagined. I have layout/design skills and thought I would be able to scan, resize and go. Nope. Turns out I am a picky artist.
First we had to source the right color printer. I wanted to print the cards myself (versus a drop shipping company or a local printer). Having creative control and being able to color match was important to me. Then it took over a year to find a paper I liked. Once those were in place I started designing, but my initial scans were not great so I researched and ended up photographing instead of scanning. After lots of trial and error my first card was printed. Then came the “how do we mail these?” 🤭
Who would have guessed that it would be easier to create and sell original artwork than my little art cards!?!
Last week I added a limited selection of art cards to my website, and over the next few weeks will be including a few more designs. By November I hope to have a total of twelve different designs based on my original art.
Take a look and let me know what you think: K.L. Rockwell Art Cards! Are there any of my original paintings you would like to see in card form?
Thank you for sharing in and supporting my creative journey!
