I think we all recognise when we overwork a painting, something I need to control. I actually refused a commission recently, thankfully a relative who understood, but the pressure of perfection is not something I enjoy at all. My painting of dogs was completely by accident just by thinking I’ll do this! And all of a sudden my cousin asked me to paint her two daughter’s dogs. Boy the pressure I felt was enormous. One of the reasons I just paint for me.
A secret about pet parents: If it even remotely looks like their pet, they love it. Kind of like your kindergartener in the school play was so good they get an Oscar. I really like the things you've done with animals, and I thought your pictures for the raffle were wonderful.
The portraits are fantastic! Well done! And I'm in 10000000000000000% with "Whenever I try too hard the painting knows it." Argh! The bane of commissions! Thanks for your honest recounting of your process. So so good.
I totally thought she was a golden, but turns out she was a Great Pyrenees/Chow mix. When I sketched her I could start to see the difference. And so sorry you lost your girl. That is rough.
I would have called it a (s)purr of the moment idea 😉.
It's good to step out of your comfort zone once in a while. It's a good way to grow and improve as an artist.
I especially love the painting of the golden retriever and the cat. They're just purrfect 😀

This is awesome. I especially like the drawing of the golden retriever. We lost our girl a few months ago
